A wonderful book about a true hero

A well written account of an ordinary man, leading an extraordinary life.
He would always be there for family, friends, buddies, always do his duty. He never spoke about the bad parts, even as his life was reduced to "light, dark, light".
I'm a Clinical Psychologist, and I treat PTSD suffered by veterans. As I read about Shifty holding in his thoughts, fearing speaking out loud for fear that it will all come back, I felt great sadness. I see a few veterans, aged 87-90's, coming in to speak, finally after all these years. Reading Shifty's story helps me be a little closer to these men, these heroes. I remain in awe.
